Even if you don’t know anything about football or sports, you’ll understand just how big Liverpool’s 7-0 win over Manchester United was.
Jurgen Klopp’s Reds sent shockwaves around the world as they emphatically dispatched a United side who, until this point, considered themselves outsiders in the Premier League title fight.
The significance of the result is massive, and surprisingly, a lot of records were set in the process.
United have never been beaten 7–0 so badly before, but this scoreline has happened four times in their history.
The first came against Blackburn in 1926, four years before a 7–0 defeat by Aston Villa. Twelve months later, in December 1931, United lost 7–0 to Wolves.
All four of the above defeats came away from home, making them tied for United’s worst ever defeat.
Blackburn, Aston Villa and Wolves suffered 7–0 defeats before the Premier League was established in 1992.
Prior to this, United’s heaviest Premier League defeats were 6–1 defeats to Manchester City in 2011 and Tottenham in 2020.
In what was his 481st game as a professional manager, Erik ten Haag suffered his heaviest defeat.
Earlier, Utrecht’s 7-1 home defeat to PSV in September 2017 had set this unwanted record for the boss.
Liverpool’s last top win United came back in 1895, following a 7–1 defeat when the Red Devils were still known as Newton Heath.
Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nuñez all scored twice to become the first Premier League trio to achieve the feat in the 21st century.
Fittingly, United were the last club to claim three doubles as Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all shone against Nottingham Forest in February 1999.

Mohamed Salah took his Premier League tally to 129 goals with his second goal against United, becoming Liverpool’s record scorer in the history of the competition.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven games against United at Anfield, their best run of the Premier League era.
In the days of first class, liverpool extended to nine games between 1970 and 1979.
It was the fourth consecutive visit to Anfield in which United failed to find the back of the net.
In those four games, United have conceded 11 unanswered goals.
David de Gea had to find the back of the net seven times against Liverpool, having never done so before in his 578 games as a professional goalkeeper.
Their previous worsts were, surprisingly, the six-goal defeats to City and Tottenham mentioned earlier.
