2023 onwards NWSL The following season, the Kansas City Current confirmed that Sam Mewis is not expected to feature in the upcoming campaign due to his ongoing injury.
The update read, “Midfielders Sam Mewis and Claire Levogez remain on the season-ending injury list along with defender Mallory Webber, although Lavogez and Webber are expected to return at some point this season.”
The midfielder continues to heal from a knee injury during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, having an initial surgery after the international tournament and a second in January.
“I don’t have a timeline for a return to soccer,” Mewis said in January, before revealing he would need a third procedure.
The player has featured in just two games since the Olympics in the summer of 2021, most recently in a Challenge Cup fixture last March. Now, she remains “focused on her improvement and future”.
“Mavis will focus on her recovery and future as she works her way back from her progressive injury to her right leg,” the team said in its news release.
“I will begin my rehab at home, where my family can support me,” Mavis said in a statement posted on her Twitter account. “I gave it my all after my final procedure in 2021. Personally it’s been a really difficult time for me and I’m devastated to have been away from football for so long.”
Internationally, US women’s national team head coach Vlatko Andonovski confirmed she will not participate in the upcoming World Cup in New Zealand and Australia this summer.
“At this point I don’t want to speculate on when or if she’s going to come back at all,” Andonovski said ahead of the team’s January 2 friendly against New Zealand. “With Sam, it’s a long-term injury and at this point, you know, we probably won’t go into the details of that.”
After playing a major role in the 2019 edition of the tournament to propel the USWNT to their second consecutive trophy, his absence is a major blow for the team. The midfielder started five of the team’s seven matches in France, including the final against the Netherlands.
Overall, Mavis earned 83 caps in her career with the USWNT, scoring 24 goals.
